NON-FOOD APPLICATIONS

A number of non-food radiation applications have been brought to the attention of AgSCAN. A few of those will be detailed herein.

WINE BOTTLE CORKS
Wine corks had for centuries been fabricated from tne cork bark of a variety of oak tree. Often the bark, thus the cork, was infested by one or more insects. And, the presence of bacteria is not infrequent.
To make wine corks suited for bottling, they are subjected to a large number of process steps to eliminate bacteria and insects.
X-radiation, applied as a single process step, would put an end to both bacteria and insects. This would bring about a cost savings over the more complex processing.
Contemporary wine bottling utilizes as many plastic corks or composite corks in which part is natural cork. It is believed that all wine corks could benefit from x-radiation processing as a means of terminal sterilization, and a high level of confidence that wine will not be spoiled nor contaminated.

WOOD PALLETS
Most foods are loaded onto pallets for transport. The traditional pallet in wide use is fabricated from wood; some from hard but most from lower value woods. Wood often is infested with termites and other non-desirable insects. Because pallets are basic to world trade, a number of countries have banned imports from other countries because of quarantine requirements designed to exclude introduction of insects into local agriculture.
X-radiation can easily treat wood pallets, killing all insects, eggs and larvae.http://www.insectslimited.com/issue%2061.pdf

MOLD REMEDIATION
The toxic"black mold" has been on the rise, invading homes and other type structures. Unchecked, this mold can render a complete house unlivable, prompting the local HAZMAT team to cordon off the property and move the inhabitants into a local motel- perhaps for months on end.
Often, there are numerous, valuable items remaining in a "black mold" house. These items can be safely removed and brought to an x-radiation facility where remediation can be brought about. A careful listing of items is required, a careful plan for handling and preparing for transit to the radiation facility is a must in order to prevent additional contamination to other structures, etc.
X-radiation has been successfully used to remediate many typical household items, including fine art paintings.

MEDICAL DEVICES
Most medical devices are currently sterilized with gamma irradiation. This has proved to be a terminal process, and at the same time cost effective. X-radiation is be a better choice over gamma for these products.
